INFORMATION ON INAUGURAL BALLS

Celebrations are being planned throughout the Greater Washington DC area, most of which are located in downtown Washington, D.C. Many of the State Societies and other groups are hosting balls. These are considered "un-official" balls as the President does not attend. Information on the officials balls has not yet been released.

For those of you who are interested in finding out about what other balls are being planned, or how to purchase a ticket to one of these balls, click on the document for an updated listing that provides the Ball, the Host, ticket costs, location and a link to find out full information. This document will be updated on a daily basis as more information is made available. Un-Official Inaugural Balls and Activities in Greater DC Area 2009.doc

GETTING TO THE INAUGURATION SWEARING-IN CEREMONY

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies will produce tickets for the Inaugural Swearing In Ceremony and will allocate them to the members of Congress (as well as to the Presidential Inauguration Committee) after their own January swearing-in about a week before the Inauguration. THESE TICKETS ARE FREE and are available only through Congressional leaders.

There is a great history behind the Inauguration and several events take place, the Swearing In Ceremony, the Departure Ceremony, and the Luncheon. To find out more about these events, their history and to sign up to receive updates on the Inauguration, click here.

Buses to Washington are being organized from the Greater Hartford Area. Click on the flyer for full details and contact information. Obama Inauguration Bus Trip Flyer.doc

"How we move forward"

"We won because the American people mobilized for change... It really was people at a grassroots level who carried our campaign financially, who carried it organizationally, and we don't want that to dissipate.'' - President-elect Barack Obama, Ebony Magazine

In the grassroots movement that was the heart of Barack Obama's campaign for the presidency, we saw time and again the passion that ordinary people had to engage (or re-engage) in the political process to work for change. With the election now one month past, it's already apparent that passion hasn't been lost.

Over the last few weeks, hundreds of thousands of supporters have shared their thoughts and experiences with us, on both the campaign itself and the work that still lies ahead. Through our online survey, through email, through the My.BarackObama community blogs and in the comments here on the HQ blog, you've shared your stories, your insights and your hopes for the future.

Already in the past few days, grassroots supporters have organized over 1,500 "Change is Coming" house meetings for the upcoming weekend of December 13th and 14th. These meetings offer supporters a chance to reconnect with one another and talk about the issues that are most important to them, as well as an opportunity to discuss what they can do to support Barack's agenda and how they can continue to make an impact in their own communities.

As President-elect Obama and Vice President-elect Biden prepare to take office, they'll need your support more than ever. Your input, through the online surveys and through these upcoming house meetings, will help guide the future of this grassroots movement.

If you haven't already done so, you can still submit your feedback through our online survey, and there is still time to sign up to host a Change is Coming house meeting in your neighborhood. In order to ensure that hosts receive all of their materials in time, we recommend that you create your event online by midnight tonight (although event materials will also be available to download as well).

As David Plouffe said in a message to supporters last month:

Your hard work built this movement. Now it's up to you to decide how we move forward.

American Moment: Fixing our health care system

Since we launched our website, thousands of people have joined the discussion about health care – as well as submitted their stories directly to American Moment. We wanted to share some of those stories in this post.

S.D. from Delaware writes:

“Like [President-elect Obama’s mother], my mother died from cancer about four years ago… During her illness, the only healthcare coverage my mother had was Medicare, which offered a 5% discount on prescription drugs. I (being employed by a pharmaceutical company) was aware of the Patient Assist Programs, which provide free medication for patients demonstrating a need, and I was certain my mother would qualify… About six months into her receiving these meds, they stopped coming. On contacting the company to ask why, they stated that patients usually do not live this long, therefore, they had terminated her application. I would like you to imagine the potentially devastating effects of this decision. My mother had bone cancer, which is known to be extremely painful, and the pharmaceutical company arbitrarily decides to stop shipping her medication because they assumed she should have died.”

We’ve also heard from a lot of doctors and nurses who offer their unique perspectives. A neonatologist who treats premature infants in Pennsylvania writes, “We are getting better and better in saving very fragile infants that are increasingly being discharged home to non-existent or deficient services.”

She’s concerned about the curtailment of services for special needs children and hopes the new administration will be able to provide access to care for “ALL children regardless of the parents’ income.”

The strains on the current system are leading a lot of young people to question whether they can truly afford to pursue a career in health care. K.J. is in her second year of medical school in South Carolina.

“I'd like to go into primary care to help out with the shortage, but I’m worried about how that will affect my ability to pay back loans (already approaching $100,000) and to raise a family, considering the long number of hours spent seeing way too many patients in order to keep the practice afloat financially, as well as more hours spent on paperwork in navigating insurance and Medicare/Medicaid. I have no idea what the solutions will be, but I think heading the voices of organizations like the American Medical Association will help.”

Keep sending your stories and ideas our way. We have a lot to learn from you.

A. A. from West Virginia makes a good point when she quotes Albert Einstein: “We cannot solve the problems that we have created with the same thinking that created them.”

Inside the Transition: Health Care

Since we opened up our discussion on health care a week ago, thousands of people have shared their stories, experiences, and ideas -- best of all, people have responded to one another, taking the conversation in new and interesting directions.

It's exactly the kind of participation we were hoping for, and that we're counting on. It's what the Transition is all about.

The interest in the subject is clearly intense, so we sat in on a meeting of the Transition's Health Policy Team to introduce you to some of the team's members and give you a feel for how they make decisions.

Senator Tom Daschle, the leader of the Health Policy Team, sat down to tell us how he plans to tackle health care and his future plans for opening up the process further.
