Organizing for Connecticut

Events of the past week have me openly questioning where we're headed as a nation, as a state, and as a community.  Earlier this week I was in Boston on election day and without exception, the people I talked with expressed anger, not hope.

As far as I could tell, no one in the Massachusetts election voted for Scott Brown.  They voted AGAINST the banks.  They voted AGAINST the special interests.  They voted AGAINST the gridlock in Washington.  They voted AGAINST a health care reform process that essentially bribed a few "centrist" Senators.  They voted AGAINST the business-as-usual system that keeps a privileged few in power while the rest of America slips into economic and social decay.  They voted AGAINST a system that allows those with money to buy the American dream while foreclosures, unemployment, and lack of access to health care have ruined far too many families.  They voted AGAINST the corporate interests and crony capitalism.

Today, the Supreme Court has struck down restrictions on corporat speech in political campaigns -- overturning 20 years of campaign finance regulations and allowing corporations to wield unprecedented control over our elections.

What we need is a system in which the American people can trust that when Congress acts, it does so based on principle, or reason, or the will of the voters -- but not on the need for campaign funds. This decision erodes that trust down to nothingness.

We need to act now to fix this broken system -- and fortunately, the path forward is clear.  We can't allow the special interests to take us from "Yes, We Can!" to "Yes, THEY can!"
